Skyrmions and Hopfions in 3D Frustrated Magnets
Speaker: Daniel Schubring, University of Minnesota
Location: Room 5209
Topological defects are considered in a simple three-dimensional inversion-symmetric magnetic system. These objects are closely related both to Skyrmions in the sense of the original Skyrme model of baryons and to knotted string-like extensions of the 2D baby Skyrmions widely studied in condensed matter physics. Higher charge configurations are shown to be closely approximated by the same rational map ansatz applicable to BPS monopoles in gauge theories and models of nuclei in the Skyrme model.
