Mathematical methods for understanding the space of games

Paul Riggins

Location: Room 5209

Complex games are ubiquitous today in both recreation and serious applications. Qualitative tools are developing rapidly to understand complex game structure, design, and gameplay phenomena, but mathematical frameworks for these questions are nearly nonexistent. This talk will explore how bridging this gap could improve our understanding of the space of games and related dynamical systems. Drawing on perspectives from physics and game design, we will review the current state of game studies, frame new technical research opportunities (distinct from existing AI and game theory approaches), and share some initial progress on formalizing game descriptions and developing equivalence relations on the space of games.
